From Prehistory to the Present Day – The Bird in Art
Lecturer: Frank Woodgate
Most people love watching and listening to birds, from colourful jays and peacocks to the tuneful songs of blackbirds and thrushes. In this lecture we will see them depicted in Aboriginal rock decorations, millennia ago, then as the attributes of gods, such as Juno’s peacocks or Minerva’s wise owl in classical times, right up to the present day.
Paintings by artists as diverse as Dürer and Picasso and sculptures by Brancusi and Elisabeth Frink, amongst others, show birds of many different shapes and sizes, as both hunters and the hunted.
Lecture will start following results of online AGM at 10.30, please arrive in good time from 10:00 to have a free tea or coffee and chat.
