Brian Stater: In the footsteps of Wren: the architecture of Norman Foster and Richard Rogers
For every radical building, someone says: “Wren would turn in his grave.” Rogers & Foster’s modernism uses steel, glass & concrete; Wren used timber & stone. Rogers’ Royal Gold Medal for Architecture citation named him “rightful heir to the traditions of Wren”, which might apply to Foster too. Would Wren approve of our leading architects? He transformed London’s skyline, had a restless and brilliantly inquisitive mind, and believed progressive design enhanced his buildings’ function, just like Foster and Rogers.
Brian Stater, retired UCL Senior Teaching Fellow in architecture promotes its appreciation through his writing and talks. He is also a former member of the Association of Historical and Fine Art Photography.
