Manet and Monet – Founders of Impressionism?
Impressionism was born in 1874, when a group of young artists including Monet, Degas, Cézanne, and Renoir exhibited their work after the Paris Salon rejected it. How and why did Manet and Monet challenge the art establishment? Manet continued to contribute to the Salon throughout his career, but he was still considered a leader of the new movement.
Norton Asbury, graduate of the Courtauld Institute, is a freelance art historian, and leads talks and workshops at The National Gallery, Wallace Collection and others. His main area of interest is French art 1850 to 1880.
