The History Society is proud to host a public lecture entitled Medieval Harpenden: The Plague and its Consequences to be given by Amanda J Thomas in the Eric Morecambe Centre (Auditorium), Rothamsted Park, Leyton Road, Harpenden AL5 2FR at 8pm, Tuesday, 1 April.
The Harpenden Museum in the EMC will be open beforehand from 7pm. Amanda will also be doing a book signing. Amanda J. Thomas is an author and historian with a particular interest in social and medical history, and with a background in journalism and public relations.
The outbreak of plague in the mid-14th century was a turning point in history and, in the lecture, Amanda will explain how our local area was affected. Known as the Black Death, the disease killed about half the population and is the source of many myths and misunderstandings, one of the greatest of which has only recently been debunked – rats did not transmit the pestilence!
Free to members and students. Visitors welcome. Booking not required. Non-members are requested to make a donation: £5 (Pay at the door)
