It’s Not Where You Start

Showing at The Eric Morecambe Centre…Hilarious. Moving. Completely true.

How do you work out who you are when you’ve spent most of your life trying to work out where you belong?

Scott Kyle has spent a lifetime trying to answer that question. From a childhood shaped by poverty, violence, sectarianism and the care system, to an extraordinary career in theatre, film and television — and eventually coming full circle as a foster carer himself — Scott’s life has taken him places he could never have imagined. And very little of it has gone according to plan.

There have been extraordinary highs, spectacular mistakes, unlikely friendships, failures, second chances and moments so ridiculous they could only be true.

But underneath the laughter are questions most of us have asked ourselves: Who am I? Where do I belong? And what am I actually supposed to do with my life?

In It’s Not Where You Start, award-winning actor, producer and author Scott Kyle takes audiences on a funny, candid and deeply personal journey through the people, places and unexpected moments that shaped the person he eventually became.

From film and television sets to the extraordinary rise, fall and return of Scottish theatre phenomenon Singin’ I’m No a Billy, He’s a Tim, Scott discovers that sometimes the things that go wrong tell us more about who we are than the things that go right.

Performed live using storytelling, photographs, film and animation, It’s Not Where You Start moves from laugh-out-loud stories to moments of remarkable honesty.

This isn’t a story about having all the answers.

It’s about spending a lifetime looking for them.

Funny, surprising, poignant and ultimately uplifting, it’s a show for anyone who has ever questioned where they belong, changed direction, started again — or wondered whether they’re actually doing what they’re supposed to be doing with their life.

From foster care to foster carer. Because sometimes you have to travel a very long way to discover who you were all along.
