Johann Strauss – The Waltz King
Lecturer: Ian Gledhill, director and set designer for musical theatre and opera.
A musical biography of the composer of the Blue Danube and his family.
Having inherited the title of “The Waltz King” from his father (also called Johann Strauss), the younger Strauss’s music went on to conquer the world. He developed the classical Viennese waltz to the point where it became as much a feature of the concert hall as of the dance floor. He also composed works for musical theatre amongst which Die Fledermaus and The Gypsy Baron are still regularly performed today.
