Over 50 years of entertainment
Formally known as St Albans City Hall or Civic Hall, the theatre can host over 850 people seated and 1200 standing. After opening in 1968, we have become a significant local landmark and Hertfordshire’s premier entertainment venue.
Situated in the heart of the historic city of St Albans, we offer a busy programme of national touring shows, rock and pop concerts, comedy, films, exhibitions, and the region’s most popular Christmas Pantomime.
Under our floor is a Roman mosaic dating from the late 2nd to the early 3rd century, which was unearthed in the ancient ruins of Verulamium – the city’s Roman name.
In 1991 the theatre closed for refurbishment and reopened as The Alban Arena, receiving a renovation to its box office area to expand the front of the theatre for the public. We’ve hosted some of Britain’s best-known bands, acts and artists including, The Who, Status Quo, Morecambe and Wise, Dire Straits, The Gorillaz and Friendly Fires. We’ve also hosted the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Alban Arena has continued to entertain Hertfordshire for over 55 years.
